In the dense city of Detroit, there’s a plethora of things to see and do and be a part of each and every day. One of the city’s most notorious destinations is Campus Martius Park, which has been a known commodity for residents and those outside city limits for more than 200 years. Located at the intersection of Michigan and Woodward avenues, and just four blocks south of Grand Circus Park, the park began as a way to galvanize citizens and offer them a gathering place.
Things to do at Campus Martius in the winter
When it comes to the winter season in Detroit, there’s certainly no shortage on the amount of activities people can do — individuals, children, couples, friends and families alike. An influx of traffic tends to occur especially around the holidays, when people want to be close to the action and experience the sights and sounds of a city in all its glory.
Recently, the Salvation Army again installed the world’s largest red kettle at Campus Martius — a true sign that the Red Kettle season is now in full swing, encouraging all people to donate about $8 million this winter to help fund not only food and shelter, but other various programs.
The kettle itself is 56 feet tall, 46 feet wide and contains a whopping 26,000 LED lights on display. It turned on Friday, Nov. 22, in synchronicity with the city’s annual tree lighting ceremony.
In keeping with the festive theme, a 60-foot Christmas tree arrived in Campus Martius in early November. The Norway spruce this year came from a family’s home in Plymouth. It usually comes over from a tree farm in Cadillac. Decorated with about 19,000 lights, the official tree lighting took place on Nov. 17.
And then there’s the ever-popular ice rink. The Frankenmuth Rink at Campus Martius is a premiere outdoor skating destination in the entire region, staying open for seven days a week and on holidays. Regular rink hours kicked off Nov. 23. Between Dec. 16 and Jan. 5, hours will change. The same will occur between Jan. 6 and March 8.
